VW Bus Transaxle Information:

All VW Type 2’s and Type 25’s from 1968 to 1990 (2WD) or 1992 (Syncro) use a common bellhousing to transaxle casing flange design. Three types of bellhousings were used - two petrol, and one diesel, all of which can be replaced with the RJES Subaru bellhousings.

The two types of petrol VW bellhousings are essentially the same. The details changed when the type 25 was introduced, and the new design superseded the older one as a service replacement part. The two are interchangeable, and the reasons for the design change are not clear.
