We have added a lot of new air induction system products for the most common Subaru powered T25 / T3 / Vanagon conversions. In addition to the two induction hose kits for use with your own 3” cone filter, which have been available for well over 15 years, we now have an additional 16 induction system kits:
- One more ‘hose only’ kit, for the cable throttle EZ30D
- 15 new kits based around out new air filter box, for fit all of the VW T25 / T3 / Vanagon body types, with multiple options for where the sir is drawn from for each
The objective was to make the neatest, most ‘OEM like’ filter box system possible, which is quieter than an exposed cone filter, which fits as many different VW model and Subaru engine combinations as possible, without needing modification to the VW. We think we’ve achieved this – hopefully you will too…….
Parts shown in Yellow above are parts which you need from your Subaru engine or VW. All parts which are not yellow are included in the kits.
Applications:
Currently versions are available to suit any combination of the following:
- Any water cooled T25/T3/Vanagon bus, van or truck, 2WD or Syncro, with two exceptions. Air Cooled or Very early Diesel VW models (1982) with the 091 gearbox need to use our extended 091 gearbox front mount kit. This moves the bell housing back to the same location as with an 091/1, 094 or auto gearbox, making enough room to get an induction hose onto Subaru throttle bodies. Also, the engine compartment junction box in the air cooled and first diesel models is located where our air filter box goes, so would need to be moved to make space.
– Air cooled models, but you would need to move the engine bay junction box away from the ‘shelf’ in front of the LH rear light to make enough room, and also to use our extended front gearbox mount with the - Any normally aspirated cable throttle EJ series engine (with or without an airflow meter), or the cable throttle EZ30D. Not suitable for any on the ‘drive by wire’ / electronic throttle engines
Features:
- Filter easily changeable with filter box base in situ. Just undo one hose clamp and two clips. No need to remove the entire air box to change the filter, as there is with some competitors products. In fact changing the filter is much easier than many OEM installations
- Versions available to draw air in from in front of the LH rear light, below the load bed near the side louvres (truck only), or via the factory VW diesel d-post (i.e. LH side) ‘snorkel’
- All versions include the breather / PCV plumbing necessary for these features to work as Subaru intended, when plumbed in to the breather / PCV systems on the relevant engine model
- New filter and all fasteners, stainless hose clips, hose joiners, etc required included
- Based on a modified, recycled filter box which we’ve refurbished and very thoroughly cleaned*
- Designed so all parts clear the engine hatch and ‘firewall’ in all applications where the crank shaft centreline is in the standard VW wasserboxer location or lower
- As standard the filter box has water drain holes in the base, as all OEM filter boxes do. We can build them sealed (to order only). If you think trying to build a sealed induction system is a good idea, such as for a Syncro, that’s your choice, but it’s not something we would ever recommend, especially on an EJ or EG series engine**
What difference does an air box make relative to a typical cone filter?
As well as looking very much neater and more ‘OEM like’, the big advantage is that a housed filter such as this significantly reduces induction noise. The following as a quote from a customer who had two EZ30D powered buses together compare at the same time, one with our basic EZ30D induction hose kit with a cone filter, and another with the air box version:
“The airbox kit is brilliant, made such a difference to the induction noise I can’t hear it now from inside the van! Very worthwhile upgrade and the fit and finish is perfect” (Jamie Lockyer, J’s Garage, Aberstwyth)
……….. Jamie specifically mentioned that the hiss from the idle control valve was very noticeable with a cone filter, and that it is not noticeable with the air filter box at all, and that in his coachbuilt Foster & Day T3 motorhome (like a British Karmann Gypsy), he can barely hear the engine at idle since fitting the air box kit. Asked again a few weeks after installation, after having done more miles with it, whether he had anything else to add about how the new air filter box sounds, Jamie had nothing to add, because he can’t hear the induction while driving any more.
